Wastewater Treatment: Food Processing
Food processing wastewater offers a unique challenge to any treatment system. Often containing multiple types of contaminants that pose serious threats to the ability of a standard sewage treatment facility, food processing wastewater can be processed using membrane technology to levels beyond those required by municipalities, and, in many cases, produces added value through the concentrate. Some of the applications include:
| UF Permeate and Feed from a Food Processing Wastewater System | | Flume Water Difficult-to-handle flume water can be treated using membrane technology producing water that is often clean enough to reuse within the plant.
CIP (Clean in Place) Water KMS can help design a membrane system that will reliably create clean water from your spent CIP water and permit reuse of CIP water and chemicals.
Starch Wastewater Using membrane technology to concentrate starches in starch wastewater reduces handling costs and increases yields. Often the starch containing concentrate can be reused.
Food Processing Washwater Wash water from such processes as salad dressing and margarine production, vegetable processing, canning, condiment products, etc. can be cleaned and the solids and oils reclaimed for other uses.

Slaughterhouse Wastewater Membrane technology can not only create pure water from slaughterhouse wastes, it can also be used to isolate Rhodocyclus gelatinosus, a bacteria potentially useful in treating industrial wastewaters.
Kitchen Waste The combination of solids, fats, oils, grease, surfactants, acids, and biological activity in kitchen waste can clog mechanical filtration equipment and kill biological systems. Membrane systems, however, can be designed to produce clean water free of oils, biological and chemical oxygen demand (BOD and COD), and solids at very low cost with little maintenance required.

Bakery Wastewater The concentrate produced by membrane technology from bakery wastewater can be sold for making pet food—creating added value at pennies per day. The treated water is free of suspended solids and can be disposed of through most municipal waste treatment systems.
Fish and Meat Processing Wastes Fish and meat processing wastes can be treated using membrane technology, reducing the use of polymers and flocculants, reducing labor, and improving the effluent consistency over conventional treatments. Costing only pennies per day, this safe, simple method of waste treatment allows you to recover or sell the byproducts for other purposes.

System Maintenance
KMS ASSIST® Service and Maintenance Programs help keep your system operating efficiently. KMS offers on-site and off-site membrane cleaning studies to refine your system's operation and prolong membrane life.
KMS Specialty Membrane Cleaning and Pretreatment Chemicals
Koch Membrane Systems can supply a full range of cleaning and pretreatment chemicals formulated specifically for members and membrane plants. Regular use of KOCHKLEEN® Membrane Cleaners and KOCHTREAT® Antiscalants will help prolong membrane life and protect your process.
KMS specialty chemicals are formulated by the same scientists that develop polymers for KMS and design KMS membranes. Unlike other cleaning companies, KMS only focuses on cleaning chemicals for membranes and systems. Therefore, KMS has taken its core competency and applied it to developing superior cleaning chemicals for the benefit of all KMS customers. |
