KMS Membranes: Cost-effectively Separating, Purifying, and Concentrating Pharmaceuticals and Their Intermediates

Because they withstand acids, caustics, and solvents, KMS SelRO^® membranes provide unique separation technologies in the pharmaceutical industry. For some applications, traditional ROMICON^® hollow fiber cartridges and spiral wound SPIRAPRO modules provide cost-effective purification and concentration.

Concentration of Antibiotics, Pharmaceutical Intermediates, and Peptides
Membrane technology can be used to concentrate these important ingredients, while recovering the organic solvents for reuse in manufacturing. One example is the concentration of 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) and the recovery of the methanol/methylene chloride sovent solution

High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Concentration and Solvent Reuse
Membranes are used in both the reverse and normal phases of HPLC processing, separating contaminants and concentrating the main fraction.
SelRO^® Pharmaceutical Applications

Clean in Place (CIP) of Fermentation Equipment
Cleaning of pharmaceutical fermentation equipment is required to maintain high hygienic standards and ensure proper function of the equipment. The 2% caustic solution can be recovered and reused through membrane recovery. Acids are sometimes used to remove water hardeners from the equipment. The acid can also be reused though membrane recovery.

KMS Product Lines for Pharmaceutical Applications
Koch Membrane Systems offers the ROMIPRO^TM hollow fiber product line, the SPIRAPRO^TM spiral wound product line and the SelRO^® NF and UF Spiral wound elements for separation operations in the pharmaceutical industry. The products are used in pharmaceutical processes such as clarification, desalting, concentration, and buffer ex-change in the manufacture of proteins, enzymes, polypeptides, blood products, antibiotics, etc.

Hollow Fiber ROMIPRO^TM Cartridges
The ROMIPRO^TM hollow fiber product is available in different cartridge dimensions and a wide range of pore sizes, as shown in Tables 1 and 2.
