MBR ADVANTAGES

PURON® Submerged Hollow Fiber Membrane Filtration

PURON® submerged membrane modules offer the latest advancements in the rapidly developing membrane bioreactor (MBR) market.  The PURON® MBR combines activated sludge with reinforced hollow fiber membrane filtration to provide a high degree of treatment with respect to BOD5, suspended solids, nitrogen, phosphorus and turbidity removal.

Hollow fibers move freely so that accumulated debris can escape during air scouring.

PURON® hollow fibers are sealed at the upper end, eliminating the need for a top header.

PURON® modules from Koch Membrane Systems have been specifically designed for MBRs incorporating many features which address the aggressive environment and elevated mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations commonly associated with MBR systems.  The use of a single header design fixing the fibers at the bottom of the module and allowing them to float freely at the top is an advanced feature which eliminates a problem often found with other hollow fiber membrane modules utilizing a dual header design; the accumulation of fiber, hair and other stringy debris at the top of the module.  The PURON® fiber is cast on an internal reinforcing braid, providing high mechanical strength and membrane integrity.

In addition to the free floating fiber tip, the PURON® module employs a unique air scour nozzle, delivering air in the center of each membrane fiber bundle to effectively scour the entire fiber length.  The advanced air scour nozzle design minimizes power consumption by delivering air efficiently in a cyclical fashion while eliminating sludging; the localized dewatering of sludge within the membrane fiber bundle, a problem commonly associated with other air scouring systems.

Systems utilizing PURON® submerged modules typically have low energy use, stable filtration and low chemical consumption.

Treatment Plants Adopting the PURON® Technology Have Found:
  • Reliability is high
  • Retrofitting older MBR technology is easy
  • Retrofitting existing WWTP infrastructure is easy
  • Requirements for cleaning and maintenance are minimized
  • Modules are available in a variety of sizes

With the growing demand for reuse quality water, MBR technology is rapidly replacing conventional wastewater treatment to meet the increasingly stringent effluent requirements of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment systems.  In addition to high quality effluent, the MBR delivers a reduced footprint providing significant savings in construction cost.

PURON® MBR modules are in use around the world at municipal sewage treatment plants and a variety of industrial plants where discharge requirements are stringent or where water reuse is required.
